Turkey boasts a modern system where a high speed toll system called HGS ( Hizli Gecis Sistem) is used.
This system is a clever way of avoiding hold ups at tolls on motorways and keeps traffic moving steadily.
On virtually all toll highways and toll bridges such as Istanbul’s Bosphorus Bridge, you cannot pay the toll incash or by credit card. You are requiredto be enrolled in the HGS automatic toll system.
A small card like device is placed inside the vehicle which is read by the toll and then collects the fee as you pass through. All vehicles must have this HGS system fitted. As you drive towards the tolls you must follow the lanes appropriate to your vehicle and slow down to 30km/h. The toll fee will be collected automatically and show on light panels as you drive away. You can easily put money onto your HGS system from either PTT (post office) or from most Shell petrol stations.
To apply first time you must go into a PTT, give them a photocopy of your auto registration document and your passport, pay TL 10 to be enrolled in the HGS system, and obtain an HGS registration sticker/label or an HGS registration card. Be sure to display these in your front windshield, as they identify you to the HGS system.
