Uzumlu sits in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains and is best known for its extensive vineyards giving it the name Uzumlu which translated means “grape”.
The area is incredibly beautiful with a combination of a peaceful place, somewhere that’s completely unspoiled and a very natural location. Uzumlu is just a twenty minute car ride to Fethiye Town and all the coastal resorts.
Uzumlu village provides an insight into real Turkish rural life with the traditional culture largely maintained. Many of the Uzumlu locals are farmers, stone masons and carpenters.
Over the years, Uzumlu has become a very popular location for foreigners to reside or retire to, due to its laidback and peaceful atmosphere.
As well as the picturesque backdrop of the rolling mountains, beautiful villas have been built and entwine with nature among the vineyards.
Uzumlu is a quaint little paradise, with emerald green meadows and magnificent mountains covered with dense forests. In the winter time the mountains peaks are covered in sparkling snow. White sheep lazily graze on the lush grass and smoke billows from the old chimneys up to the turquoise blue sky. The locals in Uzumlu are friendly folk and will greet you with a smile like an old friend.
Around 3500 people reside in Uzumlu with more foreigners joining them every year. Narrow streets are lined with old Ottoman style houses over grown with ivy. You will discover craft shops with elderly ladies weaving cotton fabrics making beautiful and unique items.
For around eight months of the year you can collect edible mushrooms from the forests including Penny Bun, Chanterelle, Japanese Pine, Matsutake and many others. Every year in early April the “Festival of Mushrooms” takes place in Uzumlu with many stalls, and lots of entertainment.
There are also many remains in Uzumlu of an ancient Rome settlement “Lycian Cadianda” that dates back to the 5th Century BC.
Uzumlu is a great place to discover masterpieces of Turkish wine making and a weaving technique called “daster” which can still be seen in the process. There is also a fantastic history in Uzumlu that goes back centuries.
Many visitors to Fethiye fall in love with Uzumlu due to its relaxing and peaceful surroundings, sometimes they then decide to retire or relocate there permanently.
Property in Uzumlu is much more reasonable in price due to being in a non tourist location, but the great thing is that if you want to visit the hustle and bustle of the coastal resorts and stunning beaches, you won’t have to travel far.
