  1.  Simit. These round sesame covered bagel like breads are a must try. They are eaten all over Turkey as a breakfast or snack on the go. They are dough dipped in molasses and covered with sesame seeds. Always go for a freshly baked Simit, the smell will lead you to them and is divine.
  2. Balik-Ekmek. This is basically a fish sandwich served either in restaurants or from small stands. Take it from me, the best and most tasty Balik Ekmek comes from stalls or stands and is served in a simple sheet of paper.
  3. Lahmacun. This in known also as Turkish Pizza. It’s a thin, round dough topped with Mince meat, onion, peppers and spices. It’s slid into the oven for a few minutes and served piping hot. Locals normally put some Parsley and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice on top and roll it up into a wrap for a filling meal on the go.
  4. Durum. This is literally a Flat Bread with either Chicken, beef, cheese or vegetables wrapped up into a roll with onion, tomato and peppers. Be sure this will fill you up if you’re looking to relieve your hunger pangs.
  5. Tantuni. Tantuni is very similar to a Durum and features tomatos, beef, peppers and spices all wrapped into a roll made of extremely thin tortilla.
  6. Midye Dolma. This isn’t really classed as a meal on the go but more of a snack. Mussels are stuffed with rice inside the shell. Locals open the shell, squeeze fresh lemon juice inside and with the other half of the shell scoop up the rice stuffed mussel and enjoy.
  7. Kokorec. This is made from cleaned and spiced sheep’s intestines. They roll the intestines many times round the skewer and cook with an open flame. This is served in either a quarter or half of a bread loaf with plenty of cumin and salt.
  8. Kumpir. This is a baked potato, cut in half longways and mixed with plenty of butter. The toppings are endless and combinations unlimited when it comes to Kumpir. You will find topping options like cheese, meats, corn, olives, peas, carrots and sauces.
  9. Tavuk Pilau. This is a favorite in Istanbul and is simply a mix of chicken and white rice. You will find Tavuk pilau being served by men from glass covered carts around towns and cities.
