These days technology is everything and a well charged Smart phone and a little technological intuition is all you need.

Getting around a foreign country is made a lot easier with certain phone applications whether it’s for translating languages, finding transport, finding a place to stay or simply ordering a meal. Knowing the right apps to use can have a really positive effect on your life, so here you will find some of the most useful smart phone apps found in Turkey, and they are all free.

Yemek Sepeti (IOS and Android)

This app is a must have if food is your thing. All you need to do is put in your address either manually or using location on your phone. You will get a full list of all restaurants that will deliver to your door. The options are endless from traditional Turkish cuisine to fast food outlets.

This app is very user-friendly, very efficient and reliable. Recently, Yemek Sepeti has released a new side of the app called Yemek sepeti Bana Bi. This is an online market where you can have shopping delivered, from fruit and vegetables to cosmetic products.

Metro Turizm

If you need to get around in Turkey and need a bus company Metro Turizm has a very handy app. This app is available in English and displays all routes, time schedules and allows you to purchase tickets online. There are other large bus companies including Kamil Koc and Pamukkale that do have apps, but unfortunately they are only available in Turkish.

Hotspot VPN

This app allows users to browse the web anonymously whilst keeping details secure. Used to bypass firewalls and censorship, the Hotspot VPN app goes a little further by promising 100% anonymity as well as identity protection from online trackers.

‘Trendyol’ and ‘N11’

These are both shopping apps where you can find pretty much anything you need. They are both in the Turkish language but have a search bar, so if you are an expat with a little knowledge of the Turkish language, you can search directly for your desired product.

XE Currency

This is a financial app with real-time data of currency exchange rates, ideal if you are handling finances in two different countries. This app has more than 55 million downloads due to being an excellent tool for using, if you are on the go.

Whatsapp, Viber and Messenger

These apps help you to keep in touch with your family and friends. Millions of people all over the world use some kind of communication app, but generally these are the most used. You can send a quick message, make a phone call or have a video call in real-time. If you both have the same app, you’re ready to go, just exchange phone numbers, it’s really that easy.

Booking.com

If you’re after a place to stay and want to find last minute deals on hotels this app is great. You can also find flights, car for hire, taxis from the airports and attractions information.

Getir

This app is another shopping app where you can find anything you need. A motor cycle driver will deliver your groceries in a very quick time.

Couchsurfers

This is a service that connects members to a global community of travelers. Use this app to find a place to stay or share your home and hometown with other travelers. Couchsurfers also organize regular events in 200.000 cities around the world so is great for meeting people and making friends.

Babbel ( IOS, Android and Mac)

If you wish to learn Turkish, this is a great app. It’s not free but you do get a 7 day free trial. You have 14 different languages to choose from, 24/7 customer service and you can learn conversation skills.
